- A Trip To The Moon is a famous short film written and directed by Georges Melies. The short film is one of history's greatest films to ever be released. Because the film is a silent film, the use of exaggerated gestures and movements is used to help explain or help viewers understand what is going on in the film. This being a French movie, awed Americans because no one had done such a film about traveling to the moon and making it look so possible to do.
2). Find a related article (on the film, director, studio,
actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content. You may use the library or the Internet.
- A Trip To The Moon or how its said in French Voyage Dans La Lune, was released on October 4th 1902. The film was inspired by Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon and H.G. Wells' First Men in the Moon. The film had a budget of 10,000 Francs which was worth every dime because of its great success. The film was so popular that it was illegally copied and given a different name. Thomas Edison's technicians are responsible for stealing a copy of the film and distributing it throughout the US under the name A Trip to Mars. Melies not only directed the film, he acted as the lead role, designed the costumes, photographed and and also produced the film.
3). Apply
the article to the film screened in class.
- In the article it talks about Melies' development of special effects during early film and every thing he did to make this film a success. The article also describes how every thing we see by watching the film was all done by Melies. He created the special effects, the plot, the costume designs, and he produced and directed the film. The article gives us a behind the scene look into what took place in order to create this film.
4). Write a critical analysis of the film, including your
personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text
material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contribution of the director.
- After watching the film I understand why its apart of film history. The film caught my attention by its use of special effects during such an early time in film history. Georges Melies did something that not many people saw. He took special effects and used it extensively in the short film and that's what made it so successful and a part of film history.
