A Clockwork Orange

1). Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

-A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 film produced and directed by Stanly Kubrick. The film is based off the 1961 novel A Clockwork Orange written by Anthony Burgess. The release of the film created many problems for Kubrick. Controversy occurred when many thought that Kubrick was glorifying violence and making the audience sympathize for a murderer and a rapist.

2). Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the Internet.

-A Clockwork Orange was originally a rated “X” film and was one of two films to be rated “X” and nominated for a Best Picture Academy award. The film was banned in Britain because of its extreme violence. After the film was banned, a 17 year old Dutch girl was raped in Lancashire and the men that attacked her sang the song Singing in the Rain, the same song the character Alex sang before him and his gang attacked a woman in her home. A 16 year old boy beat up a younger boy while dressed like Alex, white overalls, black bowler hat and combat boots. These events helped prove that the film influences and is the cause of some violent acts. Also, Kubrick had to pull the premier of the film in UK because he received massive amounts of death threats because of the movie.

Apply the article to the film screened in class.

-In the article it talks of A Clockwork Orange being the most controversial film in film history. In class we discussed that critics criticized the film because of the intense violence, rape and torture and how even though Kubrick is a very influential director, this film would not be well liked by many. Kubrick is known for his influential films and taking novels and putting them on the big screen but this particular film backfired on him. He received death threats because of the film and even had to cancel premiers of the film in different areas of the world because curtain countries had banned the film from ever being shown.

4). Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contribution of the director.

-This film is unlike any film I’ve ever seen. Kubrick took every character from the novel and brought them to life. After watching the film I understand why this film is one of the most controversial films in history, its use of violence, rape, sex, and gang activity caused many people to dislike the film. I agree with what the critics said about the film glorifying violence and the feeling of sympathy for Alex from the audience as he’s being experimented on. We completely forget that Alex is a psychopathic sex craved murderer once we see him tortured into being good. This is what people were angry about and is why they accused Kubrick of praising violence.

The Graduate/Plagiarism Statement

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
- In this film, The Graduate, the use of sound and camera movement is used throughout the film to connect on scene to another. In different scenes of the film music is being played to describe what may be going on at the time, same with the camera angles and movement. Tight framing is used in the film to display emotion of the characters and with the music being played as well gives us, the viewers, a clear understanding of whats going on in the scene.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the Internet.
-This article explains how and why "The Graduate" was a break out film during the late 1060's. The film was such a success because it mirrored the changes in Hollywood and how younger adult directors were beginning to take over. The article also talks about the director, Mike Nichols point of the film was to show how the youth were in the 60's and the rivalry between them and adults. American youth in the 60's where aimless and unalive, as the article puts it, and the character Benjamin portrays how the youth were during that time.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
-The article helped explain the purpose of the film, and why it was so popular. Watching the film confused me on why it was such a successful film, I couldn't understand why, but the article helped  gave me a clear understanding of what the director was trying to do with the film.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.
-The Graduate has a place in film history because many can relate to the film. During the era in which the film was released, youth could relate to the character Benjamin. Not only did it make history through connecting with the audience, the sound and camera movements made the film even more interesting. The music that was played in the film related to every scene that was being viewed, and with the position of the camera, I got a feel of what was going on in the minds of the actors without them saying a word. This was a great film and I now understand why it made history in the film industry.

Casablanca

1). Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
- Casablanca made a huge impact on film history. This film took love and war and created a great film. The movie is set in the early 1940s during WWII. It takes place in Casablanca, Morocco where refugees from the war would try to get visas to get the United States. The plot of love and war coming together in this film is what makes it so great.

2). Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the internet.
-  This article discusses all it took too make Casablanca come together to be one of the greatest films of all times. In 1942 Murray Burnett and Joan Allison signed over their play "Everybody Comes to Rick's" to Warner Brothers not knowing how popular their story will become. Though Michael Curtiz directed the film, executive producer Hal Wallis was the mastermind behind the film. He hired Curtiz to be the director. He hired the cast, chose the writers and even created the last line in the film. The article also talks about Conrad Veidt, who played the Nazi Major Heinrich Strasser, was the highest paid actor amongst the cast making $5,000 a year. Also the article talks about how Pianist Elliot Carpenter was hired to record the piano tracks for the film because Sam, played by Dooley Wilson, couldn't actually play the piano.

3). Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
- Watching this film I automatically viewed it as another boring film of the 40’s, but after reading the article I became more appreciative of the film. The process to create Casablanca took a lot of money and dedication. Also I’ve come to understand that even though Michael Curtiz was the director, Hal Wallis saw the success in “Casablanca” and he hired the best people to make it possible.

4). Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.
- Casablanca was very entertaining. It created a gateway for war and love movies to soon come after. I didn’t know why it is a part of film history, but i know now why its on of the greatest films of all time. Not many film companies wanted to do movies on the war especially during the time of war and Casablanca did what others were scared to do. It also combined love and war all in the same plot which is another reason why its a part of film history.

Gone With The Wind

1). Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

- In class we discussed African American cinama and the role they played in film history. In the early times of film African American actors where not allowed to star or act in films. Later on, blacks did feature in films but didnt play serious roles. They mostly played as maids, butlers, slaves, illiterarte, and as overly clownish characters. Gone With The Wind,  showed a perfect example of the kind of characters that African Americans played during that time.

2). Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the Internet.
- Gone With The Wind is one of the most popular love-hate romance films of all time. It was directed by Victor Fleming, produced by David O. Selznick and was derived from the novel Civil War and Reconstruction Period writtin by Margaret Mitchell. In July 1936, Selznick claimed all rights to the film from the novel for $50,000. The film premiered in Atlanta On December 15th 1939, it ran for three and a half hours with one intermission. The premiere of the film eventually reached $200 million dollars making it the highest grossing film. Gone With The Wind received 13 nominations and and eight Academy Awards, more than any other film at that time.
3). Apply the article to the film screened in class.
- The article it discusses the behind scenes of the film and its origin and what took place that made it such a successful film. It talked about Margaret Mitchell being the inspiration of the film because the film came from Mitchell's novel. Watching the film helps to understand the article more, the great success that the film received is talked about in the article but watching the film you see that it's a great and entaining film and it deserves the success that it received.
4). Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contribution of the director.
- I personally thought the film was great, it was entertaining. I laughed, felt sad and felt what each character felt. Besides the physical part of the film, my understanding of the films place in film history has increased because before I actually watched the film and did some reading on it, I had no understanding on why it was being showed and what it had to do with film history. Victor Fleming and David O. Selzwick are brilliant for taking such a popular novel and making it into a remarkable film.

It Happened One Night

1). Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
- It Happened One Night is a classic romantic comedy directed by Frank Capra. The story line of the film was inspired by the short story "Night Bus" and takes place in New York City where a young spoiled woman runs away from her father and eventually falls in love with a reporter, a role played by Clark Gable. It Happened One Night was released in 1934 and brought Frank Capra great success.

2). Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the Internet.
- It Happened One Night is one of film history's pioneering romantic comedies and holds that title still to this day. The film was a film from Columbia studios, which was one of the lesser movie studios at the time, but it one all five major Academy Awards, Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Adaptation. Originally, Frank Capra wanted Robert Montgomery and Myrna Loy, who were both MGM stars, to play the two leading roles but instead he ended up with MGM star Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. The screenplay was based off a story in Cosmopolitan Magazine called "Night Bus" by Samuel Hopkins Adams. The screenplay was co-written by Capra and Robert Riskin, who was uncredited for his participation in the writing of the screenplay.

3). Apply the article to the film screened in class.
- In the article it talks about Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert playing roles that have two different personalities. It says that Gable's character is a gruff and indifferent while Colbert's role is snobbish superior-acting heiress. In the film you see clearly the difference in personality between the two but eventually, in the end of the film, they fall in love.

4). ). Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contribution of the director.
- It Happened One Night is one of my favorite films because its entertaining and comical. While watching it I understood why its apart of film history. I read that the film was one of the last romantic comedies before the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) started enforcing the production code in 1934 so that was one fact about the film that I found interesting.

A Trip To The Moon

1). Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
- A Trip To The Moon is a famous short film written and directed by Georges Melies. The short film is one of history's greatest films to ever be released. Because the film is a silent film, the use of exaggerated gestures and movements is used to help explain or help viewers understand what is going on in the film. This being a French movie, awed Americans because no one had done such a film about traveling to the moon and making it look so possible to do.

2). Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the Internet.
- A Trip To The Moon or how its said in French Voyage Dans La Lune, was released on October 4th 1902. The film was inspired by Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon and H.G. Wells' First Men in the Moon. The film had a budget of 10,000 Francs which was worth every dime because of its great success. The film was so popular that it was illegally copied and given a different name. Thomas Edison's technicians are responsible for stealing a copy of the film and distributing it throughout the US under the name A Trip to Mars. Melies not only directed the film, he acted as the lead role, designed the costumes, photographed and and also produced the film.

3). Apply the article to the film screened in class.
- In the article it talks about Melies' development of special effects during early film and every thing he did to make this film a success. The article also describes how every thing we see by watching the film was all done by Melies. He created the special effects, the plot, the costume designs, and he produced and directed the film. The article gives us a behind the scene look into what took place in order to create this film.

4). Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contribution of the director.
- After watching the film I understand why its apart of film history. The film caught my attention by its use of special effects during such an early time in film history. Georges Melies did something that not many people saw. He took special effects and used it extensively in the short film and that's what made it so successful and a part of film history.
